Its curator Dr.\nStefanie Seeberg has selected some 130 historic objects, the majority of which hail\nfrom the museum\u2019s own and largely unknown textile collection, to be presented\nto the public for the first time. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The displays include fragments\nfrom Ancient Egyptian funerary objects as well as embroidery from the Middle\nAges, the Baroque Era and the Roaring Twenties. Each of the themed exhibition\nrooms, however, also contains contemporary exhibits. This means pieces from the\ncurrent collections featuring famous fashion labels demonstrate how historic\nembroidery elements are still serving as an inspiration for designers. An\nintriguing clash results from juxtaposing highly elaborate, age-old and\nprecious needlework with mass products cheaply produced in the Far East \u2013 fast fashion\nthat features deliberately and industrially produced embroidery defects\ndesigned to appear like hand-made one-off pieces. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-3 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex \/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Also causing a stir is\na modern, black robe care of Swiss luxury label Akris, which sparkles with\nembroidered LED lamps. In the next room visitors are already taught that the\nomnipresent themes of up and recycling are by no means a present-day invention.\nOn display are 18<sup>th<\/sup> century christening robes made of recycled bed\nand table linen. These are contrasted with works by Patricia Thoma, who sews wedding\ndresses from garbage bags. Some visitors will only \u2013 if at all \u2013 identify this\n\u201cfabric\u201d on taking a closer look since these dresses are enhanced with\nelaborate embroidery and top-stitching as well as the use of mink collars. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most exhibition rooms are\nonly sparsely lit to avoid damage to the sensitive old fabrics, yarns and\nmaterials. The last room, however, the museum\u2019s \u201cOrangerie\u201d, appears open and floodlit\non purpose and with vistas of the splendid museum garden. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here the modern works\nare on show. In close cooperation with the Burg Giebichenstein Academy of Fine\nArts in Halle and headed by Prof. Bettina G\u00f6ttke-Krogmann new approaches to\napplying today\u2019s manual and machine embroidery were developed. Nine textile\ndesign students addressed the theme of embroidery in fashion here in a very\ncommitted and creative but also critical manner. The study objects were\nproduced both manually and on hand-operated sewing machines. An industrial\nembroidery machine specifically made available for this project by embroidery\nmachinery producer ZSK from Krefeld was also used. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of these\nstate-of-the-art automatic embroidery machines will also be exhibited at the\nmuseum for the duration of the exhibition.
