They want to know, quite\nrightly, how their clothes are produced. Textile manufacturers have also got\nthe message: in a survey carried out by the trade magazine <em>Textilwirtschaft<\/em>, 78&nbsp;per cent agreed that sustainability is\n\u201cthe most urgent project of our times\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is why I am very pleased that\nthe PromoTex Expo has made Sustainability 2020 its centrepiece. Visitors can\nfollow a specially designated \u201cgreen route\u201d that takes them to sustainable\nexhibitors and can learn all about sustainability. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are more sustainable\ncompanies than one might think. In September 2019, 27 textiles companies were\nin the first cohort to receive the Green Button \u2013 the publicly-endorsed label\nthat marks out textiles made in accordance with social and sustainability\nstandards. These first companies include acknowledged sustainability pioneers\nlike hessnatur and vaude, companies that offer promotional wear, sportswear and\nworkwear like BrandsFashion or Kaya&amp;Kato, big chains like Tchibo, Lidl and\nAldi and the Otto Group. They are all showing that fair supply chains are\npossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to receive the Green\nButton, companies must fulfil 46&nbsp;stringent criteria. These cover\neverything from upholding labour rights to testing for chemical residues. What\nmakes the Green Button special is that, besides the individual products, the\ncompany is audited, too: Does it meet its obligation to exercise due diligence?\nDoes the seamstress have recourse to complaints mechanisms? Does it disclose\ninformation about its supply chain? A few products \u2018for show\u2019 are not enough.\nThese are the things that make the Green Button different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The continuing\nhigh level of interest from textiles companies shows us that we are on the\nright track. There are over 100&nbsp;more companies that would like to be\ncertified. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nsustainability pioneers are also proof that <strong>fair has flair \u2013 and it doesn\u2019t have to be expensive either!<\/strong> There\nare several football clubs, for example, offering fan articles that have\nreceived the Green Button.
