However, tanning does involve\nthe use of many toxic chemicals which has a major impact on the environment. Turning\nperishable animal skins into long-lasting leather requires over 250 different substances,\nincluding formaldehyde, cyanide, arsenic and chrome. Furthermore, it is quite\ncommon for residual chemicals used in the production process to seep into the groundwater,\nthe sea and ultimately the human food chain. Breeding domestic animals for their\nhides also causes emissions. Today, there are alternative materials available which\ncan revolutionise the leather industry and are being made by more and more manufacturers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In\nGuadalajara, Mexico, the entrepreneurs Adri\u00e1n L\u00f3pez Velarde and Marte C\u00e1zarez are\nspecialised in the production of vegan leather made from cactus. Their Desserto\nleather (link https:\/\/desserto.com.mx) is made from prickly pear, involves no chemical\nprocessing and is partially biodegradable. Because the cactus hardly requires\nany water to grow, it can be produced sustainably, using a minimum of resources.\nFurthermore, significantly less water is required in manufacturing than is\nrequired for conventional leather production. It is particularly popular\nin the furniture, automobile and fashion industries for accessories, clothing\nand upholstery covers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alongside cactus, other materials can also be made into a leather substitute, e.g. pineapple plant fibres. But palm leaves and mushrooms can also be turned into leather. Lighthouse projects from industry include Porsche\u2019s electric vehicle, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.porsche.com\/germany\/models\/taycan\/taycan-models\/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI-p-7ys-X5gIVmvdRCh23GgA5EAAYASAAEgIX2_D_BwE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Taycan (\u00f6ffnet in neuem Tab)\">Taycan<\/a>, where 80% of CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions can be eradicated by replacing the animal leather upholstery with sustainable recycled polyester fibres. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\nwill, of course, have to see if the demand for more eco-friendly leather\nmaterials increases in the future.
