A whole host of exhibitors highlighted the many different facets of the\nmegatrend sustainability at the recent PromoTex Expo. More and more textile\ncompanies are following the trend and delivering on their responsibilities in\nthis area by, e.g. switching to sustainable materials and converting production\nof individual garments or whole collections to organic cotton or recycled\npolyester. New \u201ctextiles\u201d made of processed paper or cork are also adding to the\nrange of different sustainable resources currently available, particularly in\nthe area of bags. Furthermore, new production and dyeing methods are being\nadopted in the world of advertising, e.g. dope-dyeing is increasingly being\nused for synthetic fibres. This process entirely eradicates the need to dye garments\nbecause the pigments are already incorporated into the fibres and filaments\nduring the spinning process, thus saving energy and, above all, water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sustainability has also become a powerful sales argument and signifies greater\nawareness in the field of advertising and corporate products. Moreover, just\nbecause something is green does not necessarily mean to say that it has to cost\nthe earth \u2013 textile manufacturers often succeed in keeping costs down by\nproducing larger runs or using a more minimalist design. As Andreas Schumann of\nthe German umbrella manufacturer Fare says, \u201cI\u2019m absolutely certain that the minimum\nrequired run for many sustainable materials will fall as demand increases in\nfuture. Fabric will become cheaper and the range of choice greater.\u201d Certification\nis also playing an ever greater role as sustainability becomes more and more\nimportant as a sales argument. The most common certificate issued at the moment\nis the Global Organic Textiles Standard (GOTS) which certifies use of biologically\nproduced natural fibres, but is primarily used for cotton today. Other widely\nused certificates include the Fair Trade Seal and recycling standards such as the\nGlobal Recycled Standard (GRS). A recent addition in 2019 was the German Government\u2019s\nGreen Button scheme which Brands Fashion, for example, has chosen as its\ncertifying authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
High quality, long-lasting prestigious products are very much in demand\ntoday, providing a niche for upscale collections like those made by the\nCanadian outdoor label Arc\u2019Teryx. As Josh Banks of Arc’Teryx says, \u201cPremium\nbrands want products that reflect their own image\u201d. Banks sees demand\nincreasing in Germany in particular. Nevertheless, longevity and durability\nalso have a downside, at least according to, amongst others, Swedish corporate fashion\nspecialist Tailor. Tailor suits can be washed in a washing machine and last for\nmany years, meaning that they do not need to be replaced as frequently. As\nDavid Berar from Tailor explains, \u201cNot all companies want this and prefer to\nbuy cheaper clothing\nthat needs renewing earlier. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The British company Mantis World is a pioneer in the field of\nsustainable clothing and uses digital aids to win over customers. They print QR\ncodes on the labels of their entire bio-cotton collection so that consumers can\nimmediately see how and where the garment was produced. According to Laura\nParrott of Mantis World, \u201cThe data we have collected reveals that customers really\nare very interested in such matters, and that is an important argument for us.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
