The German umbrella\nmanufacturer FARE from Remscheid presented its first sustainable umbrella\u201a the\n\u2018\u00d6koBrella\u2019 in 2011. At the time, aspirations regarding greater sustainability in\nthe textile industry were still in their infancy. Nevertheless, for FARE it was\nstill about investing in the future. Rather than using plastic or metal in its \u00d6koBrella,\nFARE started using quick-growing bamboo, which requires virtually no\nfertilizers or pesticides to grow. Bamboo was not just used for the handle but also\nfor the whole frame which was a real technical challenge. \u201cIt didn\u2019t sell at\nall well to start with\u201d, explains marketing manager Andreas Schumann, \u201cbut at\nleast we showed what was possible\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This early commitment\nhas, however, ultimately borne fruit. It has meant that the \u00d6koBrella could\nkeep on developing sustainable products in the background. In the meantime, they\nmake up a complete product family in the FARE range, embracing different\nwalking-stick umbrellas, hand-operated telescopic umbrellas and mini telescopic\numbrellas. The latest highlight was introduced at the Welt des Werbens und\nVerkaufens in January: a mini \u00d6koBrella with integrated shopping bag. The fabric\nused for the bag is, of course, suitable for food. \u201cWe had it specially tested\u201d,\nsays Schumann. Bamboo still plays an important role today, although primarily\nas part of the handle. It is still only used in the shaft as part of the walking-stick\numbrella. In the meantime, FARE has switched to using certified recycled\npolyester for its textile covering, which has improved the eco-balance still\nfurther. Additional sustainable details include hangtags made of recycled paper\nand an umbrella cover made of compostable foil. It is also possible to\npersonalise the covering, foil and buttons in the handle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fortunately,\nnot only has the \u00d6koBrella changed over the years, luckily demand has also\nincreased. This was also in evidence at the last PSI, where a lot of exhibitors\nclearly focused on sustainable product developments. The advertising industry\nhas recognised that green products bear a special message and are in demand\namong more and more companies. The same is true of FARE, where sustainability\nis no longer limited to just one product line but embraces different areas.\nThus, the company has presented other new umbrella models alongside the\n\u00d6koBrella. Products, which are also produced using innovative production\nprocesses that save a lot of water. The so-called WaterSave collection uses dope\ndyeing, in which the recycled polyester is already dyed during the spinning\nprocess. This entirely removes the need for the classic dyeing of yarn or\nfabrics and reduces the amount of waste water generated by about 98 percent. \u201cWe\nwere able to save six litres of water and up to 70 percent of energy per\numbrella because we no longer need to dry them\u201d, Schumann explains. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

FARE is still only able to utilise this new process for the colour black because dope dye technology demands the throughput of a high number of units, making it impossible to use it for all colours at the moment. Schumann says, \u201cHowever, we reckon that the minimum amount will be reduced in future so that we will be able to use this technology for other lines too.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
