In the meantime, however, sustainable alternatives made of bamboo or wood are also available. <\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Road signs are typically made of aluminium. Although aluminium can be recycled, it is very energy-intensive to produce and generates a correspondingly high amount of CO<sub>2<\/sub>. As a result, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itek.co.at\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ITEK<\/a>, a traffic engineering and sign-posting technology company based in Carinthia in Austria has been thinking about designing a more environment-friendly type of road sign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Potential for making major CO<sub>2<\/sub> savings<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The solution lay in using a different material. Instead of metal, bamboo and Accoya \u00ae, a wood that has been treated to make it more sustainable, play a key role in the company\u2019s new Ecoguide product line. Both natural materials are distinguished by having a long service life. The bamboo signs are guaranteed to last for 25 years as bamboo is naturally robust and largely unaffected by wind, sun and rain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"850\" height=\"567\" src=\"https:\/\/migrate.psi-network.de\/content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Verkehrsschild-von-hinten.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7426\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to the way the wood has been treated, signs made of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accoya.com\/de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Accoya\u00ae<\/a> even last for 50 years. Primarily quick-growing tree varieties, such as radiata pine, grown in certified, sustainably farmed woods and plantations, are used in production. The wood is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fsc-deutschland.de\/de-de\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FSC\u00ae<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/pefc.de\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PEFC\u2122<\/a> certified. The life of the wood is extended by treating it intensively with acetic acid from its surface right through to its very core. As a result, the processed wood absorbs less water, becomes more compact and virtually impervious to damage by micro-organisms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means an overall CO<sub>2<\/sub> saving of 10.1 kg in comparison to a conventional road sign made of aluminium. The CO<sub>2<\/sub> value of an aluminium sign is 16.9 kg, while that of a bamboo sign is only 6.8 kg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Digital printing: how the information gets onto the sign<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When producing wooden and bamboo signs, the actual motif is digitally printed to a white, reflective background before being coated in a transparent protective film. Low-emission, microprismatic background foils made by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3mdeutschland.de\/3M\/de_DE\/unternehmen-de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">3M<\/a> are used for printing. The base and laminated foils are united during the next stage of the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ITEK produces the sustainable road signs in the standard triangular, round, square and oblong formats. All Ecoguide signs are checked by T\u00dcV, the German safety standards authority, and meet standard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beuth.de\/de\/norm\/din-en-12899-1\/97988189\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EN 12899<\/a>. They are also FSC, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgbc.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LEED<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breeam.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BREEAM<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nordic-ecolabel.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nordic Ecolabel<\/a> , <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baunormenlexikon.de\/norm\/din-en-350\/2bfd9b1b-47f8-48b7-9c0e-638604428305\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EN 350<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beuth.de\/de\/norm\/din-en-355\/53983550\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EN 355<\/a> certified, as well as meeting the \u201cneutral CO<sub>2<\/sub> balance\u201d requirement set by of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tudelft.nl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Delft Technical University<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The demand for environment-friendly solutions is increasing<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The manufacturer sees a lot of potential in the new road signs and is particularly interested in selling them to municipalities who would like to be more sustainable.
