Circular economy in promotional products: Sustainable writing instruments set new standards
Sustainability is increasingly becoming a key decision-making factor in the promotional products market. There is demand for products that convey brand messages whilst also demonstrating environmental responsibility – without compromising on functionality, quality or cost-effectiveness. Writing instruments, in particular, demonstrate how material innovation, durable design and the circular economy can be combined.
One approach is the use of materials that have already completed a life cycle. Recycled PET (rPET) from used PET bottles can be processed into high-quality materials for durable writing instruments, thereby conserving resources. However, it is not just the material that is crucial: build quality, durability and product design geared towards long-term use also contribute to sustainability.
The uma RECYCLED PET PEN CORE demonstrates how this approach can be put into practice. The writing instrument is made from rPET sourced from PET bottles collected in Europe. Production takes place in ClimatePartner-certified European manufacturing facilities. A modular concept featuring four variants and 16 colour shades also opens up a wide range of possibilities for individual brand presentation.

The PEN CORE was recently honoured with the BIG SEE Product Design Award. The award recognises the combination of design, innovation and sustainability and underlines the growing importance of such product concepts even beyond the promotional products industry.
The detailed article ‘The Circular Economy in the Promotional Products Market’, to be published in a forthcoming issue of the PSI Journal, examines the role that the circular economy, modular product concepts and transparent production processes may play in the promotional products market in future, and the associated requirements for manufacturers, suppliers and promotional products consultants.
