Wildflowers are the new down

More and more consumers place special emphasis on sustainability with their apparel. British company Pangaia has taken this to heart developing winter jackets that are especially environment-saving, climate-neutral and also animal-friendly. The jackets are filled with wildflowers rather than with genuine down or man-made materials: FLWRDWNTM is the name of the new material for winter-warm fashion.

Pangaia is backed by an international body of researchers, scientists and designers. For ten years the team of experts worked on a solution for optimally replacing animal feathers in fashion by renewable raw materials.

FLWRDWNTM marked the breakthrough: dried wildflowers form the basis for the extraordinarily insulating and breathable filling. An aerogel also ensures the jackets are durable and stay in shape even when subjected to intense wear. Add to this that FLWRDWNTM  is proven to be hypoallergenic and 100% bio-degradable.

The wildflowers for the vegan filling come from renaturation projects. This as such has a positive impact on the environment: groundwater resources are saved as well as local insect species. Last but not least, regenerative cultivation significantly reduces CO2 emissions.

The new puffer jackets thereby not only fulfil the highest ecological standards but also live up to consumers’ fashion requirements with their trendy, casual design. Thanks to a clever construction this style can be worn as a short jacket, coat or waistcoat. FLWRDWNTM can be ordered online. The jacket is shipped in a compostable packaging – in line with 100% sustainable thinking along with a recommendation to either compost it in your garden or dispose of it in the organic waste.

Pangaia asked passers-by in London about their preferred material to substitute animal downs in jackets. They mentioned interesting fillers here.

Alongside FLWRDWNTM Pangaia has also developed an organic material for shirts, which consists of renewable saltwater seaweed and is 100% compostable. The company also fights for the protection of mangrove forests in Indonesia: for each garment sold the company buys one mangrove that can capture about one ton of CO2.
